Visayan songs take center stage as COF hooks victory in Vocal Solo tilt

Flaunting their own rendition of chosen songs, this year’s edition of Vocal Solo Competition in Musical Night highlighted the use of Visayan songs, wherein the College of Fisheries (COF) hooked the championship title held at the University Gymnasium, October 12.

COF’s contender Kent Sombrio showed his singing capability through the piece “Kasingkasing” enough to captivate the judges’ taste and win the title.

“Meaningful po kasi ang kanta [kasi] na-experience ko na po ang kanta. Iba ang impact sa akin,” Sombrio shared, as he was deeply attached to his chosen song.

Moreover, he did not expect to become champion in the said category since “his opponents were strong”, according to him.

However, he believed that he won because of the uniqueness of the song and the style of how he delivered it, despite not having a good voice condition.

“Ilang beses po ako napaos, actually bago lang po ako naulian sa sakit, naglagnat. Wala gani ko nag-expect wala juy condition akong voice jud to be honest,” he noted as one of the challenges he faced.

Nevertheless, Sombrio was still able to pull off his performance, knowing that he practiced for three weeks before the competition.

On the other hand, the College of Education was hailed as the first runner-up, while the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics took the second runner-up.
