Taghoy shows off in 2-set sweep against Mentors; Reapers harvest gold

EYEING FOR ACE. Ivy Taghoy of the College of Agriculture unleashed no sisterly mercy as they play against the College of Education during the Women’s Volleyball Championship Game in 2022 Intramurals.

Flashing a commanding form that sowed fear in the hearts of College of Education (COEd) Mentors, the College of Agriculture (COA) Reapers, with a twice-to-beat advantage, successfully rallied a clean 2-0 sweep during the Women’s Volleyball Championship Game to complete the series with a gold at the University Open Court, November 25.

Team Captain Ivy Taghoy showed no sisterly love against Mentors after leading an offensive masterclass with running attacks and deadly kills hacking out a thrilling 25-13, 25-20 game.

An early rally exchange opened the first frame with Reapers eventually taking the upper hand with their established gameplay swinging a solid 8-point lead halfway through the first set.

Fueled by its desire for redemption, Mentors attempted to close the gaps with Desire Ramos’ towering blocks but only managed to go as near as 16-10. Meanwhile, Reapers was relentless on all fronts headed by the brilliant playmaking of Tagohoy to clinch the first set with a 12-point spurt, 25-13.

With Mentors’ back against the wall after falling behind a set to none, the pressure was evident as Reapers’ carry on a twice-to-beat advantage, needing a win for COEd in the second for some gold-finish hopes.

A determined Taghoy with the help of Ira Jean Dacula showed championship poise early on the second set as they strut an outstanding 7-point blitz. Eager to at least equalize the game, Mentors met this with an intense chasing, trimming the initial 16-23 gap with a 4-point shortfall.

After letting COEd enjoy 5 consecutive points late in the game, Reapers did not let the championship slip away as they continue to sustain their momentum which towed them to a rousing 25-20 advantage in the deciding frame, giving the win to COA.

In an interview, Taghoy revealed that she was a shiftee, “Actually gikan ko sa Engineering nag shift ko ug Agriculture wala ko nag expect kung naa ba koy teammate,” Taghoy said.

When asked about their preparation, “Halos tanan sa amo gisulod nako sa varsity para maisa lang mi ug mabuo among bonding,” she added.
