SSC eyes to improve ventilation systems in classrooms; clarifies reason for extra fans in CSSH

To address the critical need for improvements in ventilation and cleanliness within university classrooms, Hon. Arnel A. Dunggon, SSC Senator and Chairperson of the Committee on Project and Physical Development, presented a project proposal to the student body during the Supreme Student Council’s (SSC) 2nd General Assembly for the academic year 2023-2024 that took place in the University Gymnasium on January 24.

“Tugon para sa Kaugmaon” is a project that seeks to improve ventilation systems and promote student well-being through the introduction of fans and air conditioners in classrooms.

The project, which consists of three stages: pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation, requires a total amount of 78,600 to supply orbit fans costing 1,700 pesos each to every college in the university, as well as a mobilization fee of 1,500 pesos.

“Wala’y choice ang council but to do something, kay kung [dili] ta mag-act karon, hanggang kailan pa magsu-suffer ang mga MSUans sa kainit sa mga classrooms?” the SSC Senator expressed.

Dunggon also said that the initiation of the project was based on the needs of the majority of students that were revealed in a survey with the title "Towards the Betterment of the Iskolar ng Bayan: A Survey on the Facilities and Equipment of the University," conducted last October 28 to November 30, 2023.

Equity vs Equality

According to the SSC Senator, six orbit fans are to be donated to each of the following colleges: College of Agriculture (COA), College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM), College of Education (COED), College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), and College of Fisheries (COF); and 10 to the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH).

When asked by Princess Rau Cunanan, a student from COE, regarding why ten orbit fans are allotted to the CSSH yet only six to the other colleges, Dunggon emphasized that the CSSH is the academic building of MSU.

“Kay tanan MSUan naga-agi didtoa. Whereas sa uban colleges such as the Engineering, sa H and [whatnot], though naay nagaklase didtoa, not everyone kay nagaagi didtoa to have a class,” Dunggon emphasized.

SSC President Gellie Rose Davalos also pointed out that they cannot exhaust the money for only one project, which is why there cannot be an equal number of fans distributed among the colleges.

However, Davalos promised to work together with the university’s administration to provide and add more fans, prioritizing the colleges with only six orbit fans.
