SGS, CSSH survive make-or-break matches, secure Women's and Men's Basketball Titles

In both do-or-die match-ups, School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) Vanguards, captured the Women's and Men's Basketball championships at the University Gymnasium, October 9.

In the women’s fixture, SGS managed to survive a late surge against the College of Engineering (COE) ASTEEGs, sealing the deal with a 45-39 victory.

It was all SGS in the first two quarters, including a 17-0 run halfway through, featuring their tough defense and offense, forcing ASTEEGs into turnovers.

In a bounce-back effort, COE eventually put themselves back into the ball game after trimming the lead into 2 at the early minutes of final period but SGS regained momentum and ultimately claiming the gold for the women’s team.

Rubie Rubio of SGS had the game of her life, showing her unique passing skills and steady offense, totally filling the statsheet.

She revealed that one of their strategy is to ensure a correct game plan enough to trounce ASTEEGs in basketball championship.

"We have a gameplan, ang gameplan namo una is rebounding, who controls the rebound, controls the game," Rubio said.

Meanwhile, in the men’s category, after failing to get a win in their first match-up, the Vanguards got the upper hand against the College of Agriculture (COA) Reapers in convincing 67-57 rout.

The opening quarter saw the Reapers pick up where they left off in the previous game, taking advantage of the Vanguards’ slow start, ending the period with a 15-8 margin.

The tables had turned in the next stages of the game where Vanguards started a shooting show, led by Hussein Mintong and eventually taking the lead at the end of first half. It continued until the lead became a double-digit spread.

Reapers attempted a comeback but the Vanguards ball movement, rebounding, and outstanding offense became their key plays, leading to a gold-finish for CSSH.

In an post-game interview with Mintong, he mentioned that they were focused into the game and wasn't bothered by the loud crowd.

"Lahat ng pagkakamali namin nung first game ay inayos namin at saka nagfocus kami kung saan mahina ang kalaban," Mintong added.
