Painted Silver Lining: The Avenue of Excellence

According to Henri Matisse, "Creativity takes courage." Yet, the majority of people are stuck in their uncertain mindsets. And they are imprisoned by an abundance of terrifying ideas that prevent them from producing outstanding artwork.

However, that shouldn't be in this MSUan's case...

Louise Gabrielle P. Abing, a fourth-year BS in Agriculture with a Major in Animal Science student from Mindanao State University-General Santos City (MSU-GSC), had his work featured at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Sandiganbayan Reception Hall.

After securing the silver medal in the category of digital fine arts in the 55th Pilipinas Shell's National Students Art Competition on December 6, 2023, he then proved his potential as a great artist of the current generation with his work entitled "The Avenue."

"I  just actually focused on understanding the competition's theme "Sulong Sining." It only took me 1 week for the process of finishing the final output. Basically, it only revolves on the idea of unifying different fields of art in diversity, creating a statue of hope for a better tomorrow." He exclaimed.

According to Abing, he feels prosperous in these fields, which makes him happy and inspires him to achieve enormous heights in them. Even with his huge achievement, he acknowledged that there were still many themes and topics he wanted to learn more about. Still, he continued to gain confidence to move forward, hoping for the possibilities of it being life-changing. Fortunately, it actually did make a historic change.

After hearing the news, he added, "I feel honored. As an artist, your work being featured at the National Museum of Fine Arts is a huge deal. It's truly a dream come true to be acknowledged as an artist and recognized by my work."

He also mentioned that he joined no other competitions than this. Truly, a manifestation of a globally competitive MSUJuan.

'Greater Than I Think'

Certainly, the countless hurdles that he must leap were never easy. Every sweat, each ounce of idea, the doubts, and the artistic mind of an artist trying to paint colors in this chaotic, grayscale world are truly significant.

Louise said that the majority of his doubts were the obstacles he had to overcome on his artistic journey. He constantly tells himself that he is stronger than he believes in order to get through it.

As an artist, his memorable experiences are being able to meet and have friends on the other side of the country with the same passion and purpose in life. For him, they inspire him to do great things.

Connecting Passionate Hearts and Minds

"I always let viewers interpret my work in their own understanding; at the end of the day, an art work speaks a thousand words, so let them feel it so they can be artistic as well," Abing said.

There are many independent artists that he looks up to and that have somewhat inspired his work, yet only one he admires the most: Kublai. His full name is Ray Mudjahid Ponce Millan or also known as Kublai Millan. He is known for his sculptures, and is also a painter, digital artist and photographer. One of his famous works was the giant durian in Davao.

Abing's advice to emerging artists who also hope to obtain success in the world of art is to never lose hope in their passion, walk their lives by achieving great things, and know their purpose because they are greater than what they think.

Indeed, "The Avenue" is a painted silver lining and a mark of excellence—an avenue for a wonderful future, a reminder that you are always bigger than what you think, and a fuel of courage for creativity.
