Over 640 students take qualifying exam for DOST, OWWA scholarships at MSU-CETD; MSU-GenSan DOST-SEI scholars aid examinees

Over 640 aspiring scholars took the qualifying examination for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Science Education Institute (SEI) undergraduate scholarship program during the first two batches at the Mindanao State University - College of Education Training Department (MSU-CETD), April 6.

This nationwide examination, administered by the DOST-SEI, is scheduled from April 6 to 7 with two batches of examinees per day.

MSU-CETD is one of the six test centers in Region 12 and among the 205 test centers all over the country to accommodate more than 97,000 examinees nationwide this year, DOST Philippines reported.

Additionally, 46 examinees designated in MSU-CETD as their testing center will be taking the same examination as a qualifying exam for the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) - Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP).

The DOST-SEI undergraduate scholarship examination is for incoming freshmen pursuing degree programs in the areas of science and technology.

On the other hand, the OWWA - EDSP is a scholarship grant for qualified dependents of OFWs which will be selected through the DOST national examinations.

A group of examinees from Kiamba National High School shared that they were able to prepare for the said exam via Project TARA—a free review and tutoring program organized by the MSU-GenSan Association of DOST-SEI Scholars, in partnership with the SK Federation of Kiamba, among other partner organizations.

“May mga preparations po kami nung gi-introduce ni ate Mherzel na president ng [MSU-GenSan Association of DOST - SEI Scholars] yung sa project TARA po, may pre-tutoring po sila kung ano ‘yung possible na maglabas [sa exam],” Alleen Jade Lapinig stated.

Moreover, three examinees from Polomolok National High School, Jelian Roxas, Early Jean Dela Peña, and Arron Jane Alim who are planning to pursue BS Medical Technology, BS Biology, and BS Electrical Engineering, respectively, also shared how they were able to prepare for the exam.

“Before is may teacher kami na DOST scholar tapos ginaturo niya sa amin ‘yung mga need na gawin pag mag exam na tapos gina review na din kami if ano ‘yung lalabas na mga exam,” Roxas said.

In addition, this year saw a 22% increase in the number of examinees, as reported by DOST.

Helping scholar aspirants via Projects TARA, GABAY

By providing a help desk or concern booth, pencil-sharpening station, photo booths, and sweet treats to exam takers, the MSU-GenSan Association of DOST-SEI Scholars were able to aid the examinees via their Project GABAY.

Aside from the booths and activities, they also continued the “Lapis para sa IPs” initiative that encourages exam takers to donate their pencils used during the exam to the IP learners—an initiative they started during the recent MSU System Admission and Scholarship Examination (SASE).

Project GABAY is a conjoined project with Project TARA which both aim to assist the DOST-SEI exam takers.

“Ang Project Tara is originally for the takers siya ng DOST-SEI na review tutorial. However, gisali na namin lahat ng for entrance examinations and scholarship examinations,” explained the organization’s president, Mherzel Gyn Tamorite Apusaga.

“Ang goal jud namo is to give support sa takers. Like, naa mi concern booths if naa silay concerns, pencil-sharpening stations, and other activities.  We want them to feel good na bisa’g dili pa gud sila scholars, murag ano na mi, waiting to welcome them as part of the DOST-SEI family,” she stated.
