Amidst adjusting to the heat, dust, and sheer-size MSU-GenSan campus, the 2024 Mindanao State University System Athletic Association (MSUSAA) Unity Games delegates praised the host campus' grand opening ceremony, May 31.

Delegates across 12 campuses said the grand opening ceremony brought excitement and motivation before the games will officially commence the next day, June 1.

“At first kay kapoy kaayo for us kay nag [parade] ba. Tapos init kaayo tas dili mi kaayo anad na init kay indoor man among practice tapos pagkita namo sa other na [campuses] kay murag na excite mi ug, at the same time, na pressure,” Lee Alfred Simbajon, a sepak takraw player from MSU - Iligan Institute of Technology (IIT) stated.

Similarly, Nouf Mahammad from the Maguindanao Campus also expressed compliments for the opening ceremony they witnessed while also pointing out the heat in the GenSan campus.

“Maliban sa init talaga, everything was well organized talaga…Siyempre ‘yung mga prineprepare niyo na entertainment. Grabe talaga talented talaga ang tao ng GenSan. ‘Yun talaga, untouchable talaga ang choir niyo, ang Bagwis, and mga dancers.”

Aside from the athletes, Jyra Trixie Marie Bartolo who is one of the student staff and SSC officer from MSU - Maigo School of Arts and Trades (MSAT) shared that they also did not expect the performances in the grand opening ceremony and expressed appreciation for MSU-GenSan.

When asked if there are any hassles they experienced so far, the noted the they had a hard time navigating through the GenSan campus because of its vastness.

“Siguro ang kadako sa lugar, nasaag [mi]. Kay ganina gikan mi sa gym, tas niana akong kauban naa daw shortcut, tas ang ending kay asa naman ni naabot. Siguro kana lang—dako kaayo ang MSU-GenSan.”

When asked about whether the activities they underwent for the grand opening ceremony was draining, Kaye Angelie P. Balagtas from MSU at Naawan, responded that it wasn’t.

“Okay lang siya [and] enjoy, basta i-enjoy lang nimo kay wala may kakapoy. Enjoy jud kaayo mi, wala mi naingon nga nikapoy. Makatulog mi’g sayo karon tungod kay naa mi dula dili tungod sa ka kapoy”, she remarked.

MSUSAA 2024 opening

Displaying their colorful jerseys combined with energetic chants, the delegates coming from 12 campuses roared their resounding voices around the MSU grounds during the parade, wherein the MSU-Naawan and MSU-MSAT were proclaimed champions in best campus jersey and in parade, respectively.

Each of the MSU campuses then presented their own yells that made the quadrangle lively with cheers, in which the MSU-GenSan bagged first place.

Furthermore, Paulo Francisco C. Tatad, Executive Director of Philippine Sports Commission, served as the keynote speaker, where he stressed the importance of having unity games as they demonstrate true camaraderie.

“The PSC feels secure that knowing here in the grassroots level, our youth are being equipped with life values. We have school administration striving to incorporate sports into the curriculum as well as build camaraderie and unity between each and every one of our youth,” Mr. Tatad highlighted.

On the other hand, Hon. Lorelie G. Pacquiao, Mayor of General Santos City, instilled in the minds of the athletes that representing each of their own campuses is already a winning movement since not everyone can participate in the said athletic event.

Meanwhile, Atty. Basari D. Mapupuno, MSU System President, reiterated the significance of conducting MSUSAA as it exhibits healthy competition among MSUans where unity should prevail.

“This year’s athletic meet reignites the flame of healthy competition, bringing athletes from across the MSU system together for the first time in five years. We may wear different colors and represent different campuses, but we share a common ground: a passion for sportsmanship, a relentless pursuit of excellence, and the unwavering spirit of One MSU,” Atty. Mapupuno expressed during the program, as he also officially opened the MSUSAA 2024.

The Kabpapagariya Ensemble and Balinsasayaw Dance Collective of MSU-GenSan entertained the delegates while a fireworks display left a good impression on them as the MSUSAA 2024 opened.

This year’s MSUSAA is centered on the theme “One in Movement, One in Strength, On in Unity,"  which will run from May 31 to June 5.
