“Nagiging venue siya for exposure ng players. Kasi in this tournament, [we have participants] from different schools, and naka-enhance ito ng skills nila kasi dekalibre ang mga kalaban nila.”

This was emphasized by Tournament Manager Engr. Randy P. Asturias, following a striking display of baseball prowess from institutions and baseball teams all over General Santos during the 1st Chancellor’s Cup Baseball Tournament at the University Baseball Field, September 2-3.

With the goal of strengthening the baseball community in both the university and the city, the tournament brought together baseball teams from MSU-GenSan, Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU), General Santos Foundation, Inc. (GFI), Fatima National High School (FNHS), Kings, and Latoys

Dun Ragusta, Team Captain of Latoys, expressed his excitement with the revival of baseball events in the city, stating, “After how many years karon ra nagpaliga sa baseball players diri sa Gensan which is a big achievement.”

In the championship game, the Latoys Baseball Team clinched the title, despite a scoreless 4th inning, eventually seizing a 10-8 advantage over the homecourt favorites, MSU-GenSan, who prevailed as runner-up.

After their second-place finish, Kent Dante, Team Captain of MSU-GenSan, highlighted the purpose of the tournament for the baseball community of the university.

“This tournament can help us to improve our experiences. Ma-assess namin ang pagkukulang naming and kung ready na ba kami sa competitions,” expressed Dante.

Meanwhile, the baseball team of FNHS secured a hard-fought 6-point upper hand, 7-1, over NDDU in their battle for third fixture.

Looking ahead, Engr. Asturias expressed his hopes for increased financial support for future baseball tournaments at the university, recognizing the importance of nurturing the local baseball scene and providing opportunities for MSUan and Gensan athletes to excel.
