Endowed with passion, faith, and determination, Louise Gabrielle P. Abing, a third year BS in Agriculture, Major in Animal Science student from the Mindanao State University-General Santos City (MSU-GSC), hailed as the 1st runner-up in the Digital Fine Arts category in the 55th Pilipinas Shell's National Students Art Competition, December 6 at Makati City.
His piece, titled "The Avenue," was the only one from Mindanao to make it to the Finals round of the competition. A total of 300 participants vied in the digital fine arts category from different schools across the country.
THE AVENUE concept revealed
His masterpiece emphasized the ability of young people to use art to support the idea that "art is our shield and sword". The output demonstrated the fusion of modern art and technology in a number of ways such as unifying minds and amplifying creativity through understanding and compassion. It also centered to a magnificent creation, symbolizing the product of camaraderie—a statue of hope leading to a great avenue for a very bright tomorrow.
Preparation exposed and doubts conquered
“It was more on researching actually,” stated Abing in the context of what preparation he has made for the mentioned tilt.
“I study the story behind of this competition, their goals and platforms. Though, your output must connect to the theme, it still considers their preferences in terms of styles,” the artist quoted.
He also shared that it took him seven days to finish his piece including the conceptualizing and description making.
Asked if there was any doubt if he can seize a spot in the nationals, Abing bared that there were tons of doubting moments since the time of joining.
“Thinking that it’s national level, I am against the whole Philippines would somewhat impossible for me to be included,” he added.
Gratitude expressed
Abing has expressed his sincerest gratitude to his sister Oonah for her help in the processing of his registration and applications for the competition.
“I thanked my mom for being there with me as my photographer and usherette, to my supportive Father, Earl being the supportive competitor, my classmates and friends, professors and teachers, Bagwis fam, to my Nanay Anging, aunts/uncles, Shell NSAC for making this platform for us young artists, and most of all our almighty God,” said Abing.
Youngsters encouraged
He further stated, “I’ll continue my goal to inspire and encourage young artists out there to go out with their comfort zone and never stopped achieving great things, be always grateful and humble because that’s what my Almighty God says.”
