MSU-GenSan holds 45th commencement with first female summa; 25% of graduates earn Latin honors

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, July 5 – The Mindanao State University (MSU) - General Santos quadrangle transformed into a sea of gold and maroon today as 1,902 graduates, collectively known as Batch Naraniag, marched to graduation in the university's 45th Commencement Exercises.


At least 25 percent or 478 graduates, earned prestigious Latin honors - a summa cum laude, 11 magna cum laude, and 466 cum laude. 

Eden Barbiel Umadhay made history as the first female summa cum laude in MSU Gensan's 50 years, finishing with a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.19918 from the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy program.


With Umadhay, MSU Gensan has so far produced four summa cum laudes. 


She dedicated her achievement to the generations of women who paved the way for her success. 


"My achievement today is a reflection of their enduring legacy and an acknowledgment of the trails they blazed," she said in her speech. 


"To every girl and woman out there, know that your potential is limitless," she said.

The commencement ceremony was graced by distinguished guests - Secretary Carlito G. Galvez, Jr., Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), who delivered a keynote address, and Atty. Basari D. Mapupuno, MSU System President.


Galvez, Jr., the commencement speaker, emphasized the importance of education in building a peaceful and prosperous nation. 


He urged the graduates to use their knowledge and skills to contribute to the development of their communities through their chosen fields.


“But in doing so, please remember that all of you are peace-builders, peace-workers, and peace-advocates,”


He emphasized that peace building is not only achieved by a handful of people but with a whole nation and society.

Graduates hailed from various colleges and departments, including 96 from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM), 12 from the College of Fisheries (COF), 229 from the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) and the Institute of Islamic, Arabic and International Studies (IIAIS), 237 from the College of Education (CoED), 294 from the College of Agriculture (COA), 304 from the College of Engineering (COE), 227 from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), and 230 from the School of Graduate Studies (SGS).
