In anticipation of the upcoming Mindanao State University System-wide Athletic Association (MSUSAA) competition, the Mindanao State University (MSU) Generals Badminton Team made a heat debut during the Inaugural Badminton Invitational Tournament of the Chancellor's Cup.

The competition, spearheaded by Coach Maychelou R. Castillo and MSU-GenSan’s Sports Development Office (SDO), showcased the mastery of the team across various categories, including Supermixed Beginners, Intermediates, and F/G, held at the University Gymnasium last November 11–12.

"This is a good avenue para ma-test nila [MSUan Athletes] yung kanilang skills, capacity, and level nila comparing it to other players here in Region 12," Coach Castillo stressed. He then emphasized that this event will be a stepping stone for the team to explore their potential in order for them to prepare for the MSUSAA this coming December 15-22

A total of 37 pairs competed in the Beginners category, 31 pairs in Intermediate, and 16 pairs in F/G, making the fifth leg of the Chancellor's Cup a dynamic and competitive battleground for badminton enthusiasts.

Amidst the intense Beginners category finals match, Marvin Casipe and Bernard Villeza emerged as a dominant force with an impressive winning streak from the elimination round to the finals of the round-robin format. They faced off against Pao Legado and Howard Vergonia, securing a 35-16 landslide victory.

Meanwhile, Jay Lao and Raphael Corquera reinforced their dominance in the Intermediate division with a decisive victory. Clinton Hechanova of LBC GenSan and Archie Mateo of Koronadal Smashers, on the other hand, left no doubt, topping the F/G division.

“This is an initiative from our Sports Director Professor Sammielyn Lavente that SDO wanted MSU — General Santos to be the center for sports in Region 12. It will be a yearly activity ng MSU GenSan na tayo ang maghost para maka provide tayo ng avenue sa mga student athletes natin na apart from intramurals and the institutional competition like MSU system athletic meet and the MASTS game,” Castillo added.

The badminton action will resume on November 18, with MSU Alumni and Employees taking up the challenge.
