MGDS bounces back on regional tourney for the first f2f appearance in 17 years; breaks to open pre-quarters and HS grands

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, July 27 - The 48th Mindanao Parliamentary Debate Championship (MPDC), hosted by Ateneo Debate Varsity and staged at Ateneo de Davao last July 19–21, marked MSU-GSC's first face-to-face participation in the regional competition, following two years of exclusively online events since 2021. 


Mindanao State University - General Santos Debate Society (MGDS) managed to break the 10th and 25th college teams in Mindanao, where both contingents advanced to pre-quarterfinals and college reserve breaks. 




In the open category, Jefferson Quipit and Isam Benedict Dimacutac secured the 10th break, while Ramzel Delloro and Zyrex Kier Cortex achieved the 25th ranking team.


In the high school division, Ivan Shem Gumilid and Seith Andre Ortega, who also earned the 7th Best High School Speaker award, made an impact with a 7th break, while Hannah Levee Santos and Andrea Ysabelle Aban reached the 8th break, advancing to the semifinals and grand finals, respectively. 


Michael Angelou Gevero adjudicated in the outrounds, judging both the open quarterfinals and open semifinals. 


The judging panel also featured MGDS members Jaysan Castro, Joash Dalimbang, and Rolando Baisac. 


There were 37 competing college teams and 15 high school teams during this 48th installment of the annual debate competition for all Mindanao institutions.

Among the competing teams were Chorena Grace Lorania and Elizabeth Zaldivar, also from MGDS.


The event was attended by institutions such as Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU), Ateneo de Zamboanga (AdZU), Father Saturninos Urios University (FSUU), Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy (IHMA), Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU)-Davao, Mapua Malayan Colleges Mindanao (MMCM), Mindanao State University (MSU-IIT, Marawi, and GSC), Philippine Science High School (PSHS)-Caraga and Southern Mindanao Campus, University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC), University of Science and Technology and Southern Philippines (USTSP), Xavier University (XU)-Ateneo de Cagayan.
