Mentors overturn 2-5 deficit, stun ASTEEGs in MSU Intramural Softball

AGGRESSIVE SWING. The COEd Mentors batted gold in the Softball championship game against COE ASTEEGS during the 2022 Intramurals of Mindanao State University-General Santos City.

Emelyn Ugan's game-winning homer sealed the victory for College of Education (COEd) Mentors against College of Engineering (COE) ASTEEGs, 7-6, in a hell-bent game to claim their second MSU Intramural Softball championship in four years.

Mentors took advantage on its twice-to-beat handout to seal the series win.

Facing a 5-3 count, Mentors are eyeing to seek a possible comeback in the fourth inning, Xylla Jane Rufino drilled a sinker to score as Samantha Saligumba's batting has been successful and closing the gap to one, 5-4.

In the fifth inning, ASTEEGs hitted their chances to gain a point yet it was then anticipated by the assertive Mentors leading to Pugasa strike out which then Mentors' Inocencio responded and caught ASTEEGS ladies off the hook soon thereafter.

Game tied onset the extra inning, 5-5, ASTEEGS' April Joy Alinsasaguin hit off a rainbow to tap the second base then followed a batter by captain Christyl Opren to garner a possible victory over Mentors which are down, 6-5.

Mentors right-handers Ugan and Rufino held the lead to an aplomb batter then running to a come-from-behind win as ASTEEGS did an unfortunate decision in the breaking point and the cicerones lighted the torch in a thriller, 7-6, final score.

“Grabe yung happiness na nararamdaman ko ngayon, dahil sa hardwork at teamwork ng team ay nakamit namin ang victory," said Fernilyn Lasawang on her emotions after she clinched her first championship both as a captain and a mentor.

As Mentors won the final round, the title served as the first in a three year drought and their second in four-year long.
