“We are expecting more about the performances kasi iba 'yong performance last year.”
The judges of the Mass Dance competition for the Intramurals 2023 of the Mindanao State University - General Santos (MSU-GenSan) expressed their unanimous expectations in this year's mass dance tilt as the event unfolded at the university quadrangle, October 4.
In an interview, Mr. Al-nezzar Ali, Ms. Evelou Villodres, and Ms. Maria Emileen Salaño, the three judges who also presided over last year's mass dance competition, expressed their heightened expectations for this year's performances as they anticipate that the performances would evolve as the year progresses.
“Every year iba-iba 'yong level,” Villodres stated.
“It’s better if the comparison should lie on the event every year being presented para fair 'yong discussion. Kasi nakakatakot on our part if we say something that would be comparable. May merits kasi 'to. The MSU has its own merits; has its own powerful displays.” Ali followed up on Villodres while emphasizing why the performances should be compared not to the performances that they witnessed outside but rather to the performances each year.
Ali further critiqued that there has been a deliberate focus on enhancing the dance aspect of this year’s performances.
“As experienced in our expertise in the genre of dancing, dapat kasi kumpletuhin mo ‘yong spectacle, narrative concept, dance skills, and of course, 'yong extra added effects that would really capture the audience. Because if you cannot, even how good the dancers are, it would just fall short,” he stressed.
He further added that the judges are looking for a comprehensive presentation that includes clear narrative concepts alongside dance skills.
“More on props, sayaw, at maraming sayaw (this year). Pag sinabi mo kasing dance, it should be a complete setting. Dapat 'yong dance skills, dapat klaro ang narrative concept—’yun ang hinahanap namin, yun ang wala. Hindi katulad nong nanalo last year, mero siyang ascension, the graph. Tsaka isa pa, this year, wla akong nakitang dynamic.” Ali further gave his observations as a judge which was seconded by Villodres.
Ali and Villodres also noted that they did not see the “relevance to the theme” of the performances which is part of the criteria.
Ali posed a challenge for the next year’s performances to focus on continuously improving as the dance skills are already impressive, but they need to enhance other facets that the judges are looking for.
“‘Yun lang ang challenge ko sa mga choreographer lalo ang students, mag-aral, mag study, i-improve. Yung dance skill okay na ‘yun kasi lahat magagaling, pero may mga hinahanap kaming facet na dapat madagdagan siya.” Ali imposed.
