Maratabat receives NCCA accreditation; Sevilla urges MSUans to promote local literature

Maratabat: MSU-Gensan Writers Guild was officially recognized by the National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA) as a People’s organization in compliance with NCCA Board Resolution No. 2017-265 last September 9.

Mubarak M. Tahir, the adviser of the said Guild explained that the accreditation went through a thorough process and despite having difficulties in some of the documents  they still made it through and expects opportunities for future collaboration and linkages.

“Mas malawak na opportunity to collab with other organizations knowing na national siya. For example, sa Luzon Visayas, so pwede siyang makipag collab na related sa literary.  Nagbubukas siya ng opportunity for future collaboration and linkages. So mas malawak yung kanyang  purpose,” Tahir expressed.

With its mandate to conserve and promote the nation's cultural heritage, the NCCA aims to broaden the reach of artistic and cultural products, both locally and internationally.

By collaborating with NGOs, LGUs, indigenous groups, and educational institutions, the NCCA seeks to integrate traditional culture into the national mainstream while ensuring excellence in all its programs and initiatives.

While Maratabat, the official Creative Writing Guild of Mindanao State University-General Santos, champions the literature of the tri-people and organizes activities that benefit both its members and the broader community, it is not solely focused on writing but  also emphasizes helping and uplifting others, promoting local literature  by bringing it to the grassroots level.

Moreover, Jhomarie M. Sevilla, the president of Maratabat explained that this is only the second year of Maratabat, yet they have already “demonstrated not only to MSU-General Santos but perhaps to the entire SOCSARGEN region, that it has the capacity to contribute and offer something valuable.”

“Dili magod naman kaya na kami lang ang mag-promote sa local literature, kailangan pagid namun og help, knowing na non-government, a non-profit organization ni. We are eyeing for future collaborators,” the president said.

Sevilla emphasized the need for local institutions, including the government and MSU itself, to support this initiative.“Now, since we are promoting tri-people, why not i-focus punta dito siya sa literature nila, because sabi nga nila, nakabuhol ang kultura at ang panitikan at ang wika. So what if mag-focus na dito sa literature for us to uplift?” he said, proposing that MSU-Gensan should concentrate on its own cultural narratives.

Sevilla stated that they hope that the next Chancellor will prioritize literature within the university’s objectives, given the current lack of literature programs in Gensan. “Kasi mao na ang atong goal, kana ang appeal sa ato ang GMVO: Goal, Mission, Vision, mga mga Objectives. Kung amo na ang gusto sa MSU Gensan, why not mag-invest pud, why not mag put  budget ang ato ang government, or ang institution itself nato sa mga ing aning klaseng mga event or program?” the president explained.

Sevilla's vision is to seek funding from the NCCA for MSU-General Santos to establish its own writers' workshop with the goal  to initiate a program that highlights the unique narratives and literary voices of the region, as it has distinct stories to share that differ from those found in other parts of Mindanao.
