Lavan Letters: The Tint of Hope

In the heart of Mindanao, where diversity blooms, a remarkable movement is underway. In the corridors of Mindanao State University - General Santos, students and facilitators have come together under the banner of the 'Lavan Letters' campaign—a symphony of voices, each letter a note of change. With the resolute determination of youth, they are not merely advocating for the passage of the SOGIE Bill; they are crafting a tapestry of hope for a society that embraces everyone, irrespective of who they are or whom they love.

In recent years, the struggle for equal rights and protection for the LGBTQ+ community has gained momentum in the Philippines. The SOGIE Bill (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression Bill) aims to address discrimination and promote equal opportunities for all, regardless of one's sexual orientation or gender identity.

The university's students have risen to the occasion, recognizing the significance of this legislation in fostering a more accepting and compassionate society. With only 2 branches of drop boxes present in Mindanao, MSU-GSC with the initiative of Hon. Gellie Rose Davalos, current SSC President, the "Lavan Letters" campaign came into fruition in the campus during the heights of Intramurals 2023.

The "Lavan Letters'' campaign, which translates to "Fight with Letters," is their creative approach to influencing change. The campaign involves students from various backgrounds, coming together to write heartfelt letters addressed to senators. These letters emphasize personal stories, the importance of equal rights, and the positive impact the SOGIE Bill could have on the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in the Philippines.

The said campaign aims to have at least 10,000 letters gathered in MSU-Gensan and 100,000 worldwide. This campaign is a whole week of writing letters conducted in the SSC booth, left side of the University Gym.

"It is high time to give the burden to the government or system to create a safe space that promotes inclusivity and equality within our society." vocalized by Ashley from the College of Social Sciences and Humanities.

She entails that as an ally of the LGBTQ+, it is important to participate in such campaigns as it empowers the LGBTQ+ community to be more open in expressing themselves to the public and being their voice especially to those who are too afraid to speak.

One of the campaign's organizers, Hon. Elaine Mae M. Borja, the Chairperson of Committee on Gender and Development, shares her perspective on the initiative: "It is an act and a call for senators to notice us. Let us be a voice for the marginalized, discriminated against, and neglected."

Furthermore, Hon. Elaine Mae M. Borja together with her campaign members encourages MSUans to take part in this initiative as it not only concerns the individuals in our locality but also to the Philippines.

MSU Gensan's participation in the "Lavan Letters" campaign exemplifies the university's commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse campus community. The students' passion and dedication serve as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to join the movement for equal rights and acceptance.

As the "Lavan Letters" continue to pour in, the students are setting a powerful example of how young voices can drive change and influence policy decisions. Their unwavering determination demonstrates that the pursuit of equality knows no bounds, and together, they are working towards a more inclusive future for all Filipinos.
