'Crescent Moon' discussion addresses Ramadan misconceptions

To address the common Ramadan misconceptions, the Muslims and Non-Muslims of Mindanao State University-General Santos City actively took part in listening in the "Crescent Moon: A Ramadan symposium for Dialogue and Understanding" held at the Regional Science Research Center (RSRC), March 20.

"Siguro lack of awareness, kaya sinasabi ng iba na walang pasok. Pangalawa, akala nila ang Ramadan ay oras ng pagtulog, paghinga at ito'y baliktad po, during Ramadan ay supposed na maging aktibo lalo ang isang Muslim," Shaykh Abdulkhaliq Abtahi, the keynote speaker of the event emphasized as one of the misinterpretations about what Muslims do during the month of Ramadan,

He added that during the month of Ramadan, laziness is prohibited for every individual.

Moreover, Abtahi uttered that even though the calendar marks the date of Ramadan, it is still essential to see where the moon is.

"Hindi tayo maaring mag depende sa kalendaryo [Gregorian Calendar]. Kahit sinabi pa sa kalendaryo na bukas ay Ramadan na, kailangan at kailangan pa rin nating mag conduct ng moon sighting," he stressed.

The said event was spearheaded by the Supreme Student Council (SSC) in which Hon. Melden Dave Casing, SSC's Sports, Literary and Cultural Affairs head, stated the essence of Ramadan is more than just a holiday.

"People should have a dialogue or understanding about Ramadan kasi we are in Mindanao State University. It is important for us students to really know different cultures," Casing remarked.
