General Santos City, October 11 – As suspenseful acts of each contingent vanquished the stage in the University Gymnasium, the College of Education (COEd) guarded their crown, holding the title of champion for modern contemporary dance for three consecutive years.
From Novena sa Patay in 2022, and 12 Apostoles last 2023, the COEd continued their victory with their theme festive Santacruzan.

On the second day of Intramurals 2024, each college showcased their modern contemporary dances with different themes for each performance, presenting diverse choreographies and complete creative and stylistic freedom.
In the statement of Hazel Jane J. Anating, College of Education Students’ Organization (CESO) President, she felt happy, grateful, and at peace, knowing that the COEd championed modern contemporary dance since 2022, considering that all of their efforts are paid off with the success of the group.
“More than anything, I really feel at peace right now knowing that the College of Education championed Contemporary Dance for three consecutive years. At peace because they continued their victory, their labor paid off, and this year they proved that contemporary dance is not just about horrors,” she stated
In addition, Anating was also grateful for the support and love of her constituents, highlighting the cheers of every mentor uplifted them and boosted their morale to give their all for their full performance.
“Whatever they have right now, they worked hard for it. Hence, a huge congratulations to all the dancers and a huge thank you to all the people behind the success of every dance performance. They made this night a mentors' night. Again, it is owl time, it's Mentors' time,” she expressed.
John Lloyd Mallanao, head of the contemporary dance group, said that he is very happy because it is his third time to participate in contemporary dance, and he witnessed every moments of COEd’s championship from 2022.
“Ikatulong sayaw ko na ni sa modern contemporary, sobra-sobra akong kalipay sa among pagka daog, kay dili ni first time na na champion mi kundi ika tulo nani, ug memorable kaayo sya sa akoa ug sa akong mga kauban na dancer na 4th year kay last sayaw na namo ni sa intrams ug na champion pa gyud,” he remarked.
Preparations and challenges
Mallanao said that before the dance night, they underwent a series of conditioning and warm ups to lessen the pain in the proper dance practices that they made, as well as workshops to enhance their skills and talents
“Before the event tanan dancers nag undergo gyud mig conditioning sa among lawas kay para dili mi makalitan among lawas ug before nag start among proper practice sa dance gi hatagan mog workshop sa among choreographer para ma enhance akong pa among skills,” he added.
The team also experienced challenges in terms of their health, particularly with fever, due to excessive practices during the rainy season, which resulted in the halting of their practices to recover.
“Ang challenges na among na encounter kay tung gilagnat ang team, that time sigi ulan tapos after practice pag uli ma taligsikan mao to nag ka hinay hinay ug gipanglagnat ang dancers ug na stop among practice mga 5 days kay need mag recover sa tanan,” he expressed.
Additionally, Mallanao said that they also experienced problems with regards to different class schedules, affecting their practice time during the preparations of the event.
“Dili mi parehas ug schedule tanan, ang uban maka out sila 7 pm so instead na maka start mi ug 6 pm para mag practice dili namo mabuhat kay naa pay uban na paadto palang mao to 3 hours per day nalang mi maka practice,” he said.
Mallanao expressed his appreciation to the team for their perseverance.
“Sa akung mga kauban, salamat kaayo kay walay ni quit bisag kapoy na kaayo ug subra ka busy sa atung mga schedule, thankful kaayo ko sa inyoha. Sa mga naga support sa amoa thank you kaayo sa inyong full force na support,” he said.
In the event, CSSH won as the first runner up, followed by SHS, COA, CBAA, COE, COF, and CNSM respectively.
