Chancy Aragasi, SDO Vows to Empower Sports Program with Angara Cup Culmination

"We are very happy and lucky to have this program because other than the regular program, yung intrams natin, meron pa rin tayong other platforms na nagkakaroon ng games ang students to strengthen camaraderie amongst students."

These remarks were made by Chancellor Usman D. Aragasi, JD, MPA in a personal interview after the annual Angara Cup program's success, held at the University Gymnasium of Mindanao State University – General Santos City (MSU-GSC) on September 8-10, 2023, with the support of Senator Sonny Angara's office.

Participated by the seven colleges of the institution, namely College of Agriculture (COA), College of Business and Accountancy (CBAA), College of Education (COEd), College of Engineering (COE), College of Fisheries (COF), College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM), College of Social Sciences of Mathematics (CSSH), and Senior High School (SHS) this year's three-day Angara Cup was a monumental achievement.

"Angara Cup shows our commitment that we are promoting good health and well-being to our students, friendship, and somehow, we are looking forward that the university is not only strengthening the academic performance of our students but even our sports," emphasized Chancellor Aragasi.

He also underscored the growing recognition of the Bachelor in Physical Education degree, expressing his satisfaction that it is gaining the recognition it deserves.

Envisioning a state-of-the-art gymnasium for MSU-GSC, Chancellor Aragasi also stated, "In the part of the admininstration. we are trying to make a strong collab with several donors that we can provide us financial assistance in improving sports facilities in the campus. And we are very thankful kasi meron na tayong 75 million para sa completion ng gymnasium natin."

The dream of a more impressive university gymnasium has been a longstanding one for both MSUans and the Chancellor, and they are thrilled that this dream will soon become a reality, as the bidding process for the 75-million-peso donated funding will commence soon.

"Other than that, kung paano ma-improve ang grounds natin, it’s a long dream, although hindi pa klaro but we will see to it that we have funding in improving our track and field ground: paano marubberize, paano lagyan ng basic facilities, so that all MSUans will be happy in our facilities," added Chancellor Aragasi, outlining his vision for the university’s sporting scene.

While financial constraints, the reopening of classes, and students' class schedules prevent the university from joining the upcoming Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS), Chancellor Aragasi assured that MSU-GSC is committed to providing platforms for students to explore their sports potential.

“We will join (MSUSAA), kasi that’s part in our commitment. In fact, in the part of faculty and staff we will also be joining Civil Service Interagency Sports Activities,” Chancellor Aragasi assured, with the approaching Mindanao State University System Athletic Association (MSUSAA) in mind.

Prof. Sammielyn Lavente, the Director of the Sports Development Office, also looks forward to expanding the Angara Cup's offerings in the future. She aims to showcase the talents of local MSUans, not only academically but also in the realm of sports.

In the following year, Pickleball, Lawn Tennis, Darts, and Larong Pinoy are in the pool of the sports being looked on to be in the cup's additions.
