BINI excerpts: Freshies’ guide to college life

Trapped in this fairytale, but I don't wanna wake up in this dream, baby!

Freshies’ Night 2024 proved once again that it is indeed one of the grandest events in the university. With its theme, Get Bini-fied & Amplified: Freshies’ Night Glitz and Glide, freshies from the seven colleges and one institute gathered as one for the sweet celebration of their commencement.

As the fun dies down and the weight of academic responsibilities piles up, let the echoes of Bini’s songs guide you into this Talaarawan. From finding the right friends to embracing the ups and downs, these musical excerpts offer a heartfelt reminder of what lies ahead.

The Cherry on Top to your College Life!

Good ingredients (and even friends) are hard to find! Much like searching for the perfect elements for your college life, it takes a lot of patience and enough exploration to carefully find the right mix of friends that would purely get your sugar on lock—maybe even turn the heat up of your sugary life.

Upstarting your college life lets you meet people from all walks of life, sharing similar interests and stories, and finding those who’d subtly fit with who you really are. With the ideal circle of friends to stand beside you, it is undeniable that your college experience may be one whole lot of blast.

Yes, trials and errors may come your way, but it is through your friends that make the journey sweeter—that touches your journey with a cherry on top.

“One thing also sa gina consider sa college is to choose the right circle of friends. Ngayon, sa circle ko, I’m very thankful. Kailangan mo talagang pumili ng kaibigan na tutulungan ka, hindi yung maipapariwara ka.”

For Aquaria, “Nyah! ”, Queen of the College of Fisheries and the Mx. Dragayla 2024 First Runner-Up, being in a positively impactful circle will not only lead you to productive means but also make your MSU years bearable. Indeed, your friends’ presence is truly a present!

Along the Strings of an MSUan

Having the privilege of personally experiencing the MSU culture will be as timeless and momentous as it always has for every MSUan. With the stride of all your seniors, who were also once Freshies like you, may you always keep in mind that they are here to steer you all the way—ushering you to go above and beyond.

As you now approach the real deal of collegiate life, get ready for multiple late-night study sessions, majoring in organization, and living up to every aspect of what college life has to offer. Nonetheless, your seniors, professors, and new-made friends will stand side-by-side as you tread along the diverse threads of MSUan life.

Nahirapan ako mag adjust. But, okay lang siya kay dream school jud nako diri.

Indeed, for Virgilyn Argante, a freshie from the College of Agriculture, the uneasiness of adjusting will all fade and fall into place, for it will always be worth it at the end of the daywhen you take your last strolls as an MSUan while wearing the best ensemble you could ever wear: the hard-earned maroon hat and sotra toga you have always dreamed of.

As a new batch of freshies follows along the twines of every MSUan that has marked their own feats, may we still all continue to revisit the drive that led us to the ever-prestigious Pamantasang Mindanao.

Buhay ay Hindi Karera!

Undeniably, navigating through your first year in college is not without its labyrinthine twists. The journey can be fraught with unexpected turns and challenges. However, do not fret, because life is not a race.

“Sabi nga ng Bini, walang mabagal at walang mabilis. You don’t have to rush yourself; just take your time and take things slow. You’re still adjusting, and everything is new for you, so just be kind to yourself.”

These wise words from Emarie Dedal, a Freshie from the College of Engineering, emphasized the importance of allowing yourself the leverage to move at your own pace.

Sometimes, we get so caught up with envisioning the future that we forget to take care of ourselves today. Have the grace to explore the journey ahead. Savor each moment, and remember that every step, no matter how slow, brings you closer to your goals.

Be here for the Journey

Your college experience at MSU is all about making the most of every opportunity. May it be a simple ‘agdahanay’ to eat somewhere during breaks or attending a fun party with your friends during a university event. Regardless of what, just stay a bit longer.

“Found something new, through the dark nights, the highlights, you’re my lifeline.” An excerpt from one of Bini’s songs Here with you that beautifully reflects the essence of finding support and discovering new things about yourself along the way.

Just as the song speaks of being there for each other through tough times, your MSUan experience will also be enriched by the people who stand by you, helping you navigate the highs and lows of college life.

Hence, linger a little more, laugh a little louder, and embrace the journey. Savor the moments of triumph and struggle alike, and remember that you're not alone in this adventure.

So, paint the sky in different lights and hold onto all that you could be. Let your college years be a canvas of shared experiences and lasting memories!
