Updated: Mar 18, 2023

UNLEASHING LAYOUT PROWESS. Bagwis EIC Aubrey Maye Arrieta and Associate Editor Herkurt Tamba presented their layout in news section during the SAPA Mindanao workshop.

Two campus journalists from Bagwis, the official student publication of Mindanao State University-General Santos City (MSU-GSC), backed right for ethics in journalism and Gender and Development (GAD) during the recently concluded 63rd Federation of Mindanao State University Supreme Student Councils (FEMSUSSCO) Executive Meeting and Turn-Over Ceremony held at MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), February 24-28.

Herkurt Tamba of Bagwis bared that both events have made him receptive to the challenges and demands of time.

Asked what is his take away in the four-day event, “it was such an experience for me as a writer to take part in a collective mission to stand as herald for gender equality and to strengthen our core principles as relation to the ethics of journalism,” he answered.

The FEMSUSSCO was attended by 12 out of 13 MSU campuses including the MSU-Main in Marawi, MSU-IIT in Iligan, MSU-Gensan, MSU-TCTO in Tawi-Tawi, MSU-Naawan in Misamis Oriental, MSU-Sulu in Jolo, MSU-Buug in Zamboanga Sibugay, Lanao National College of Arts and Trade (LNCAT), Lanao Norte Agricultural College (LNAC), Maigo School of Arts and Trade (MSAT), and MSU-Bataraza in Palawan.

Journalism workshop

Mr. Lewey T. Jimoya, former Editor-in-Chief and layout artist of Silahis, the official student publication of MSU-IIT, emphasized the roles of campus journalists in the society and said that entering in a publication is not about getting an award nor for a clout.

“Dako ug potential ang isa ka student publication, gitagaan mo ug budget ana by the students so that you may represent them,” Jimoya quoted.

Now that the spread of false information in the internet continues to proliferate, he reminded the students the importance of being critical thinkers.

“Even though the internet has war our sense of reality, a publication could make a stand,” he equipped.

Apart from his inspiring talk, he shared his inputs about the fundamentals in newsletter layout and the trend in today’s school paper making.

Dr. Jovanie Caballero, meanwhile, tackled about the ethics in journalism including the content-based principles that student journalists shall uphold. He asserted that a publication is biased to nothing but the truth.

As campus journalists and iskolar ng bayan, Caballero said that the participants are the epitomes of the heart, conscience, coupled with skills and intelligence.

“Being campus journalists, kayo ang number one influencers, kayo ang number one na opinion shapers. Iyon ang napakalaking responsibilidad bilang campus journalists,” he further asserted.

Gender and Development workshop

Three knowledgeable panels in the name of Dr. Hilton, Dr. Moner, and Dr. Aguja graced the workshop and eloquently answered the questions of the participants.

In the question “What is Gender and Development for them?,” Moner responded that GAD is really a paradigm of itself.
“It is a perspective that recognizes the participation of male and female in equality,” answered by Dr. Aguia.
Sir Hilton tersely pointed out that the concept of GAD is really about equality.

As one of the participants, Tamba at the end of the session said, “it is our responsibility to hoist GAD causes using our platforms to capacitate its goals and actualize change in the society. This is because it is our pursuit to advance the world by responding to the imbalances and inequalities.”

The GAD workshop was held on the third day of FEMSUSSCO event at Mini-theater of MSU-IIT.
