Mindanao State University - General Santos City - Vaunting their phenomenal record on boards two and one of the men’s and women’s categories, Wesley Serenuela and Trisha Atoc of the College of Engineering (COE) ASTEEGs sealed triumph as they anguished nine other participating teams in Intramurals 2023 chess tournament at Regional Science Research Center Hall, October 7.
Serenuela, hailed as the tournament's best second boarder in men's category, contributed eight points, leading the ASTEEGS to spotlight where he was an asset to their 28.5-point success.
COE’s Jerome Kent Masong and Allen Je Villorente both nailed six and a half on boards one and three, paving victory for the ASTEEGS, while Jacob Aparte on the fourth board also garnered a high-scoring seven and a half points, snagging the title for their squad.
Meanwhile, the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and College of Education took home silver and bronze after amassing 23.5 and 21.5 points, respectively.
In the women’s category, Atoc, who flaunted her unblemished win-loss record after showcasing first board supremacy, kicked off the ASTEEGs triumph as she aced nine points to their 29-point feat.
Propelling ASTEEGS to the top, Michaella Macasling and Demie Moore Sarmiento both nabbed six points in boards one, while Jamie Dianne Langub, who was also awarded as the best performing fourth border of the women’s category, displayed eight points.
At the same time, the College of Agriculture end up as first runners-up with 26.5 points, whereas the College of Business Administration finish as second runners-up, allotting 25 total points as the tournament halted.
