ASTEEGS boast back-to-back men’s chess crown via six-point margin; Lady Reapers, snag off the throne with point harvest on boards two, four


Emulating last year’s dominance, the College of Engineering (COE) ASTEEGs solidified their claim to the throne by securing an impressive 27.0 points, earning them the back-to-back men's chess championships, while the College of Agriculture (COA) Reapers were now reigned as the new champions of the women’s category, tallying 23.5 points, at the Regional Science Research Center on October 12.

The ASTEEGS, led by the high-scoring duo of Jerome Kent Masong and Wesley Serenuela, who combined for a total of 15.5 points, and the support of Jacob Aparte and Lloyd Fernandez, were able to clinch victory. On the other hand, the College of Business Administration and Accountancy Tycoons followed with 21.5 points, earning silver, while the College of Education took bronze with 19.0 points.

ASTEEGS’ Serenuela, who was a crucial contributor in the tourney, expressed his relish with their victory: “Naispired gid ko kay last [year] pud namo sa Intrams, [nag]-champion mi, biskan may nawala sa amoa na player, na-maintain gyapon namo ang streak,” as he reminisces about the COE’s last year triumph.

“Lami kayo sa feeling since namaintain pud nako ang best top boarder,” he resounded after bagging the best third boarder. Serenuela was also thankful for those late-night training sessions that they had, which now bear fruit with their successful title defense.

“Sa College of Engineering, laban lang ta ug I hope na maging overall champion gyapon ta karon,” emphasized Serenuela, ecstatic with the ASTEEGS overall championship pursuit.

Meanwhile, with the augmented stellar performances of Reapers’ Gioriz Gelig on the second board and Krizel Abejar on the fourth, claimed the women’s chess title with 23.5 points, securing victory at the same venue.

The duo, with Julijah Flores and Euna Oclarit on the first and third boards, flaunted unwavering dominance which left the College of Social Sciences and Humanities Vanguards with the silver, tallying 22.5 points, while the College of Engineering slipped onto the podium with 22.0 points to claim bronze.



Furthermore, other individual awardees in the men’s category are the College of Business Administration Tycoon prospect Roger James Cabanyog II, with a flawless eight-to-nil run at the tourney, playing as the first boarder, and College of Education Mentor Roger Olaso, with seven wins, on the fourth board.

In the women’s category, the first boarder of the Senior High School Department Legends, Monaliza Alcoseba, takes the throne with six conquests, while the College of Social Sciences and Humanities bet, JS Cherrie Mae Guillermo, nabs 6.5 points, attaining the third board pinnacle.
