This year’s freshman night took place on August 30, at the University Quadrangle. The event kicked off at 7:30 pm and onwards, with the theme, “Embracing Culture of Diversity.”
Students took witness of different talents participating in their offered events: Y2K Pop Song Competition and Yell Competition. Afterwards, they socialized under Connecting Ties Without Lies, Connection Hunt: The Human Bingo and showcased their Y2K-inspired looks to garner the title of Best in Wow.
But “Why”2k?
In consideration for the freshman, Melden Casing, Senator of the Student Supreme Council, proposed the theme to give the students to explore the turn of the millennium era. “Most of the freshmen are born in 2000s – it’s a unique way to engage the students who may not have experienced the Y2K phenomenon firsthand,” answered by a fellow Senator of the SSC, Jesselyn Baroquillo.
Y2K was commonly referred to as a widespread computer programming shortcut. Computer experts and financial analysts feared that the switch from two-digit year ’99 to ’00 will wreak havoc on computer systems. The transition itself was expected to bring down computer system infrastructures.
With this in mind, the change in Y2K were to symbolize the embrace of progress, adapting to new challenges and looking forward to optimism, as freshmen start their college journey here in Mindanao State University – General Santos City Branch.
“Just as society navigated uncertainties during the Y2K transition, (the theme) could encourage students to approach their own transitions with confidence and a sense of camaraderie,” proclaimed Baroquillo.
Connecting with your inner 2000s
"Welcome to the land of fame excess, am I gonna fit in?"
After showcasing their talents in Y2K Pop Song Competition, the program immediately kicks off to one of their major events: Connecting Ties Without Lies and Connection Hunt: The Human Bingo. There and then they mingled, giving away ribbons to fellow students. They too got to know each other by finding specific traits to finish their human bingo.
What followed suit was K-pop Random Dance Relay. This pushed the freshmen to dance and sing alongside peers, and allowed them to create wholesome memories for the night. "Now na naa nako diri ma-say dyud nako na daghan ug wild, and it's really fun to be here." (Now that I am here (in MSU-GSC), all I can say is there are a lot of energetic (people), it's really fun to be here.) Says one of the College of Agriculture freshmen during the K-pop Dance Relay.
The Lasting Impression of a Transition
After aforementioned activities and the awarding, the program proceeded with the Rave and Foam Party. The after party was hyped up by DJ Mike Racadio.
When asked of their overall experience for the night, the freshmen simultaneously described it in one word: enjoyable.
"Sulit ang pagpunta mo rito." (Coming here (in MSU) was worth it.) Proclaimed by a student from the College of Natural Sciences and Humanities.
In addition, multiple freshmen were asked of their sentiments of their expectations for the next events to come.
"Very expected na ilang pasabog, like MSU na gud ni." (Their event twist was to be expected.)
"...And we're looking for more."
As one of the events to welcome the upcoming golden year of the university, it is indeed no doubt that it got everyone excited and thrilled — especially the freshmen.
What more "pasabog" does Mindanao State University have to offer? From yesterday's throwback, it is indeed the perfect welcome sign to tomorrow's golden age — and what could be the best year yet of the university within the millennium.
