The MSU-Gensan was acknowledged for having the biggest contingent in the event, sending 47 undergraduate BAELS students and 8 professors from the English Department namely Joveth Jay Montaรฑa, Jeffrey Floriza, MAED-English, John Jay Morido, LPT, Rossel Mangaron, MIE, Fernan Lehao, MAED-English, Regie Amamio, PhD, and Ireneo Pelayo, MES.
The conference's three-day activities included plenary sessions, AILA (Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquรฉe, or International Association of Applied Linguistics)-ASEAN Symposium, round table discussions, a featured themed panel, colloquia, workshops, paper presentations, poster presentations, three-minute thesis (3MT), Outstanding Paper Award, and networking sessions on different topics of Applied Linguistics at Henry Sy and Yuchengco Hall which were headed by Dr. Shirley S. Dita of DLSU-DEAL.
"I am really overwhelmed by the quality of the students' research. If there's one thing here that's striking for me, it's the amount of undergraduate papers and the quality that they presented here. I am looking forward to more undergrads in ICALLE 2025," Dita expressed in an interview.
The conference had 217 paper submissions and 135 paper and poster presentations from different universities within and outside the country.
"There's a lot in Philippine Linguistics that we don't know and we should know. That's why I'm very much delighted to be one of the presenters because I was able to share the knowledge I gained upon conducting research. I'm also very impressed with the other presenters in focusing on issues that contribute to language research in the country. As one of the youngest presenters in the conference, seeing how the organizers of the event were amazed by us is very satisfying, lalo na when they said na there is really a big future for Philippine Linguistics because of us," Rhudje Piyaw, one of the undergrads who presented from MSU-English Department stated in an interview.
"I did a lot of preparations for ICALLE. Knowing that the event will be held in Manila, I know it will be a big challenge in my financial aspects. I was hesitant if mameet ko ba lahat ng finances, but with God's grace, na finance rajud with the help of some sponsors. With regards naman sa presentation, we did a lot of revisions in the paper just to meet the requirements and standards of the conference and grabe ang conflict sa schedule kasi sumabay yon sya sa intrams week. It was really tiring but it was worth it," Piyaw added about his preparations for the big event.
Moreover, the research papers were the final requirements of the 2nd year BAELS students in their subjects ENG121, Structure and Development of Philippine English, and ENG103, English Morphology and Phonology, under the supervision of Professor Joveth Jay Montaรฑa.
